With such a busy operational environment to protect, Gatwick Airport Fire and Rescue Service has always recognised the importance of training.
And having worked with individuals from all manner of industries, we also realised that there was a gap in the market for exactly that – comprehensive training courses that equip participants with hands-on skills that can be used confidently and competently in the workplace, and that also meet employers’ duties and responsibilities.
As a result, Gatwick Fire was established in 2010 – the same year we were awarded tier four approved training provider accreditation from the CAA. We’ve now completed five successful initial firefighter courses (IFFC), working with some of the UK’s top airports, including Heathrow, Manchester and London City.
Gatwick Fire is entirely operated by operational fire managers and firefighters, and is headed by Gatwick Airport station manager Simon Petts, who has 16 years’ experience in the aviation fire industry, and a further 9 with the Royal Navy fire service.
We also have eight senior instructors with a combined 120 years’ service, all in operational fire roles at UK airports. These fire service experts delivered all the IFFC training delivered at Gatwick between 1985 and 2005. All our instructors maintain their competence in the workplace by forming part of a ‘watch’ system that provides round-the-clock fire cover for Gatwick.
In the future we plan to offer an even-wider range of courses that suit all our customers’ specific needs. We also welcome enquiries about designing bespoke training packages.
